Companies, shops urged to sell water in drought-stricken areas at cost

Operation Hydrate has urged water companies and chain stores to sell water at cost price, particularly in areas that are hardest hit by the drought. The campaign started in the first week of last month and aims to distribute water across the country to areas worst affected by the drought.

Organisers launched a weekend water drive in partnership with the Nelson Mandela Foundation and Proudly South Africa.

The National Lotteries Board donated R50 million to Operation Hydrate when it kick started the weekend drive on Friday, and by yesterday evening the initiative managed to raise over R61 million.
