Drought to beef up red meat consumption

The worst drought since 1982 will prove to be an early Christmas gift for red-meat lovers in the short term, but will likely eat into their pockets the longer it continues.

With the widespread drought leading to rising feed costs, livestock farmers have been forced to slaughter their herds. This is causing a glut in the market and therefore a decline in the cost of red meat products.

Earlier this week Grain SA said the cost of importing maize into the country had risen 15% as the rand weakened to record lows following the removal of Nhlanhla Nene as Finance Minister.
