See in the new year with a SOLAR STORM

A solar storm headed toward Earth today is set to send off 2015 with flare.

People in some areas of the United States may get a rare opportunity to view the colourful Northern Lights as the aurora borealis passes through.

The solar event has been categorized as a ‘strong,’ storm by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’ Space Weather Prediction Center, and it could linger through New Year’s Eve.

This geomagnetic storm has been categorized as a G3 event for today, and is expected to simmer down to a G1 (minor) storm by New Year’s Eve.

These classifications rank the strengths of such events, and today’s G3 storm means that there could be disruptions in radio communication and low-frequency navigation signals, according to NOAA.
