The El Niño Effect: Fewer hurricanes, but the Pacific was a hotbed for storms

El Niño dampened this year's Atlantic hurricane season while simultaneously creating conditions for powerful hurricanes in the Pacific Ocean. This is according to a new study has found that an El Niño in the Pacific Ocean almost always hampers hurricane activity in the Atlantic Ocean–sometimes by as much as 50%.
This year, only 11 named tropical storms formed in the Atlantic Basin, with four transforming into hurricanes.
In contrast, there were 18 named storms forming in the eastern Pacific this year and 14 named storms in the central Pacific.
