Joburg gets very own EcoBrick bench thanks to 370kgs of collected plastic

Sean Williams started collecting and filling ecobricks during the lockdown so he could build a bench for the residents of Lonehill, Johannesburg.

Lonehill, South Africa (30 September 2020) – For the last 6 months, Sean Williams has been collecting and filling ecobricks and his efforts have finally paid off! After collecting and filling 700 ecobricks, Sean had enough to build a bench in Lonehill Park, Northern Johannesburg.

The bench was constructed and revealed to the community recently. You may be wondering how Sean has been able to fill his ecobricks. Well, he has been doing community cleanups in Lonehill, Johannesburg with friend Lovemore Robson. The pair have been picking up rubbish along the main roads in the area.

The community helped fund the project which required help with building materials, labour and to cover the cost of painting it, they covered the total of R7300.00.

Lovemore got to get his hands dirty on this project by helping build the bench. The 700 ecobricks used to complete the bench took a total of 370kgs of plastic waste out of landfill space.
