Sperm whale dies after being washed up on British coast following 23 deaths from the same North Sea pod

A sperm whale that washed up on the British coast has died after a 13-hour struggle.

The 30-tonne bull, which was alive when it was found beached at Hunstanton in Norfolk at around 7.30am, died shortly after 8pm despite desperate attempts to save its life. The 46ft-long male was left stranded 1.5 miles from the sea after the tide went out this evening. Rescuers had hoped it would be able to swim back out during high tide at 2.50pm but it was unable to right itself.

The 30-tonne mammal was found beached in Norfolk this morning where another bull was found dead on January 23 - across The Wash from Skegness where four others died a day later.

It is the 24th whale from the same pod to have died on the North Sea coastline in the past month. Eight were found dead in Friedrichskoog, Germany, three days ago.
