Western Cape agriculture calculates millions lost over crippling drought and fires

The impact of fire and droughts may cost the Western Cape fruit sector an estimated R720 million, while the broader cost to the agricultural industry could go into billions.

The Western Cape Legislature’s Beverly Schafer on Thursday explained that stakeholder organisations gathered to calculate the costs of the drought and crippling fires.

According to Schafer, the wine industry has suffered damage of around R20 millon after at least 82 hectares of vineyards were damaged due to fires and drought.
